Lewis Hilton Downs, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed mechanic in the forestry industry, passed away on June 23, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the age of 78. Born on May 6, 1947, in Alexandria, Virginia, Lew, as he was affectionately known, dedicated his life to his family and his work, finding immense joy in both.
As a proud Air Force veteran, Lew served his country with honor before embarking on a fulfilling career as a mechanic, where he specialized in the forestry industry. His passion for his job was evident in the meticulous care and dedication he brought to every project.
Lew's greatest pride stemmed from his deep love for his family. He shared a remarkable marriage of 58 years with his devoted wife, Elaine Downs, with whom he built a life that was rich in love and companionship. Together, they raised two wonderful children, son Chris Downs (Terrie) and daughter Lindy Downs (Michael), who carry forward his legacy of kindness and commitment.
Lew's family bond extended beyond his immediate household. He was a cherished grandfather to nine grandchildren and eagerly anticipated the arrival of his first great-grandchild. The warmth and joy that defined his relationships with his family were a testament to his caring nature.
He is also survived by his brother, Greg Downs, who will forever carry the memories of their shared upbringing and lifelong bond.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis H. Downs, Sr. and Betty Grissom Downs, who undoubtedly laid the foundation for the compassionate and hardworking man he became.
His contributions to his loved ones, his community, and the forestry industry will be remembered fondly, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Lew has left an indelible imprint filled with love that will resonate through generations.
Services will be held at the Biloxi VA Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Picayune Funeral Home.
