Nicholas George Karmoukos was called home to eternal rest on Thursday, July 24th, 2025. He was born on February 14, 1938 in Kardamyla, Chios, Greece. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Karmoukos and Eftichia Frangos Karmoukos. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Antonia Gialis Karmoukos. He was the father of Dimitris Karmoukos (Charlotte), George Karmoukos (Mary), John Karmoukos (fiancée’ Meredith Loveless), & daughter Stephanie Karmoukos. He was the best Papou to his grandchildren, Chloe (Chloaki), Antonia (Nia), Nicholas (Nick), Sophia (Sofoula), Nicholas (Nikolaki), Antonia (Nitsa), & Nicholas (Niko). He was also Papou to his two bonus grandchildren, Bailey and Matthew Loveless.
Nicholas built his life for his family and nothing gave him greater joy. He came to the United States from Kardamyla in 1966 and started his career in Uniondale, New York at New York Oliver Fiberglass from 1966 to 1974. He then moved his family to Clearwater, Florida to work as a paint contractor. In 1975, he made New Orleans his home and worked for New Orleans Southern Scrap as an electrician.
In 1977, he opened MELKAR Marine, a ship chandling company housed in New Orleans, LA and also opened ANS Marine in 1983. During his retirement, he built McNeill Rabbitry on his acreage and supported a thriving business for 5 years.
Since 1992, McNeill, Mississippi is the place he called home. Nick was his happiest taking care of his land, tending to his livestock, and growing his vegetables. Every day for him on the farm was true bliss and was the essence of who he was-a hard worker, a devoted husband, a loving father and an amazing Papou. His love for his family and for his Greek Orthodox faith were an inspiration to us all.
An Orthodox Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1200 Allen Toussaint Boulevard, New Orleans, LA 70122.
