Wayne Anthony Cruthirds, beloved husband and father, died on Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at the age of 82 in Carriere, Mississippi. He leaves behind his cherished wife of 54 years, Sundra Sierra; his two children, Wayne Anthony Jr and Sarah Elizabeth; his sister, Barbara (Brunner), and brothers, Kevin W and Charles A. He is preceded in death by his father, John J. Cruthirds and mother, Rosemary Messina Cruthirds.
Wayne was born in New Orleans on February 1st, 1943, and discovered his affinity for education early, completing his undergraduate degree at Loyola University, and moving on to obtain a Master’s degree in Latin and Greek Philology at Harvard University. He then joined the Peace Corps to teach English as a Second Language in Micronesia. His commitment to teaching was profound as he spent over 55 years as a teacher of Latin, first at Jesuit High in New Orleans, LA, then Wayland High in Wayland, MA and retiring from Saint Scholastica Academy in Covington, LA, after more than 30 years of teaching there. His students fondly remember him as “Mr. C.” and he inspired countless minds with his passion for learning and his unique teaching style.
His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and service, and he will be dearly missed by friends, family, and all those whose lives he touched.
All those who knew and loved Wayne are invited to attend a memorial visitation on May 13th, 2025 at Saint Peter Catholic Church in Covington, LA from 9:30am-11am. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11am.
